Winemaking Notes
100% mataro (AKA mourvèdre).
Tasting Notes
This mataro offers incredible red-fruit notes of strawberry and dried cherry, followed by more complex hints of light oak spice, pepper, flowers, earth, and an herbal minty character. Its moderate tannic structure lends it a medium-full body and ability to age for up to 10 years from release.
Food Pairing
We recommend pairing mataro with meats with lots of umami flavor, such as beef short ribs, pork shoulder, barbeque, lamb, rabbit, pork sausage and veal. Earthy vegetarian options like lentils, wild rice and shitake or portobello mushrooms also work well as pairings or sides to a main course.
About Mataro
As long as the weather is warm, mataro is a versatile grape that can thrive in a variety of soils. It's popular across the south of France, where it is known by its more common name, mourvèdre. It is especially significant in Provence and the Côtes-du-Rhône, and is often used in Châteauneuf-duPape. Languedoc also produces it as a single varietal wine.

Spain grows it in many areas, including Valencia, where it is known as mataro or monastrell. We have produced this wine in more of the Spanish style, and thus chose to use its Spanish name.

In the United States, it remains a lesser known variety pursued by wineries that specialize in Rhône-style wines, although it’s becoming more widely known as the M in the so-called GSM blends of Grenache, Syrah and mourvèdre.
