A simple approach to dying easter eggs naturally with the kids! All you need is eggs, white vinegar, and various spices and vegetables to make a fun mix of colors.
Ingredients
  • BEET DYE:
  • 1 large red beet (more if desired)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • RED CABBAGE DYE:
  • 1/4 head red cabbage, plus outer leaves, chopped
  • 2 cups water
  • 4 tbsps white vinegar
  • ONION PEEL DYE:
  • 3 onions (red or yellow work), outer peels only
  • 2 cups water
  • 4 tbsps white vinegar
  • TURMERIC DYE:
  • 2 tbsps ground turmeric
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsps white vinegar
  • PAPRIKA DYE:
  • 2 tbsps paprika
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsps white vinegar
Directions

Beet Dye

Wash, peel, and cube one beet (if you are cooking more for richer color don’t cut or peel more than one, you can eat the others at a later time). Place in a medium saucepan with water and vinegar; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 30 minutes. Remove from heat, set aside to cool completely. Remove beets and transfer liquid into a glass or stainless-steel bowl. Let eggs soak for approximately 8 hours. Remove dyed eggs and pat dry.

Red Cabbage Dye

In a medium saucepan, bring all ingredients to a boil. Lower to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes. Let cool and remove cabbage. Let eggs soak for approximately 8 hours. Remove dyed eggs and pat dry.

Onion Peel Dye

In a medium saucepan, bring all ingredients to a boil. Lower to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes. Let cool and remove onion peels.Let eggs soak for approximately 5 minutes or longer. Remove dyed eggs and pat dry.

Turmeric Dye

In a medium saucepan, bring all ingredients to a boil. Lower to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Stir well and let cool.Let eggs soak for approximately 5 minutes or longer, depending on how dark you want them. They start at yellow and will changed to a dark golden brown. Remove dyed eggs.

Paprika Dye

In a medium saucepan, bring all ingredients to a boil. Lower to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Stir well and let cool.Let eggs soak for approximately 5 minutes or longer, depending how dark you want them. They start at orange and will changed to a dark orange/brown. Remove dyed eggs.

Color Guide for Dyed Eggs

  • purple cabbage = blue on white eggs, green on brown eggs
  • red onion skins = lavender or red eggs
  • yellow onion skins = orange on white eggs, rusty red on brown eggs
  • red beets = pink on white eggs, maroon on brown eggs
  • ground turmeric = yellow eggs
  • paprika = orange on white eggs and darker brown on brown eggs
